Minoxidil prices in Spain: why topical and oral cost so differently
In Spain there are four brands of topical minoxidil 5%, an official preparation from the Spanish National Formulary, compounded formulations and an oral presentation. Here is what is authorised, what makes one pack cost more than another, and why you will not read a figure in euros here that we cannot verify.

Short answer
In Spain there is no single price for minoxidil: 5% topical minoxidil is sold as four medicines authorised by the AEMPS, in packs of different sizes, as well as an official preparation or a compounded formulation, and each combination has its own price. To compare properly you need to work out the cost per month of treatment at the dose in the summary of product characteristics, around 60 ml a month, and check the current price at the pharmacy.
Key points
- The AEMPS has authorised four minoxidil 50 mg/ml (5%) cutaneous solution medicines with the same composition: Minoxidil Viñas, Minoxidil Cinfa, Minoxidil Biorga and Normopil, all registered in CIMA.
- Their authorised indication is moderate androgenetic alopecia, at 1 ml every 12 hours and a maximum of 2 ml a day, according to their summaries of product characteristics; it is not recommended in people under 18 or over 65.
- The AEMPS National Formulary also includes an official preparation, 2% minoxidil in hydroalcoholic solution (FN/2006/PO/039), with the warning "Do not swallow": a different strength and a different route, so its price cannot be compared directly with that of an industrially manufactured 5% product.
- When applied to the skin, minoxidil also passes into the bloodstream: there is a published case of syncope after topical use (Dubrey and colleagues, BMJ Case Reports, 2015), and the summaries of product characteristics say it should only be used on a healthy scalp.
How long each pack of 5% topical minoxidil lasts
Presentations from the Minoxidil Cinfa and Minoxidil Viñas summaries of product characteristics in CIMA-AEMPS, calculated with the dosage in the product information (1 ml every 12 hours); each brand has its own sizes, so the useful comparison is the price divided by the months the pack covers.
| Pack | Presentation | Approximate duration at 2 ml a day |
|---|---|---|
| 60 ml | 1 bottle of 60 ml | 1 month |
| 120 ml | 1 bottle of 120 ml or 2 of 60 ml, depending on the brand | 2 months |
| 180 ml | 3 bottles of 60 ml | 3 months |
| 240 ml | 2 bottles of 120 ml | 4 months |
Searching for "minoxidil price" returns dozens of different figures, and they can all be true at the same time. The reason is not some mystery of the market: it is that the same word covers very different formats, strengths, brands and manufacturing routes. A 60 ml bottle is not comparable with a 240 ml one, nor is an industrially manufactured medicine comparable with a compounded preparation made up in the pharmacy's back room. Here we explain what is authorised in Spain, which variables move the price, and what it means for one form to be applied to the scalp and another to be swallowed. What you will not find is a figure in euros: prices are checked in BOT Plus and, for medicines funded by the Spanish National Health System, in the Ministry of Health's Nomenclátor; and we do not publish figures we have not verified in a primary source with its date.
What minoxidil actually is and why there are two versions
Minoxidil was originally developed as a vasodilator antihypertensive, in other words a drug to lower blood pressure. Over time it began to be used for hair growth. That dual history explains why today, in Spain, there are two pharmaceutical forms with different regulatory status: the cutaneous solution or foam, applied to the scalp, and the oral tablets.
They are not interchangeable and they are not "the same thing in tablet form". They are different pharmaceutical forms, with different product information and different risk profiles. As for exactly how minoxidil works in androgenetic alopecia, it is worth being honest: the mechanism is not fully understood. The explanation that circulates online, that it dilates the vessels and brings more blood to the follicle, appears on commercial websites, not in the authorised product information.
What the topical form is authorised for
The indication set out in the product information is the treatment of moderate androgenetic alopecia. That leaves out other types of hair loss that people often confuse it with: it does not cover alopecia areata, which is autoimmune in origin, nor telogen effluvium, that sudden shedding which usually resolves on its own, nor scarring alopecias. Buying minoxidil without knowing what kind of hair loss you have is starting at the wrong end. If you want to understand the condition the indication does cover, it is worth first reading why hair falls out in androgenetic alopecia and how far it goes.
The three variables that make the price jump around
1. There are four brands of the same active substance
MINOXIDIL VIÑAS, MINOXIDIL CINFA, MINOXIDIL BIORGA and NORMOPIL share the same active substance and strength: 50 mg/ml, marketed as 5%. The fact that several authorisations from different laboratories exist with the same composition accounts on its own for part of the price spread you see when comparing pharmacy websites.
2. Pack size is not always compared properly
In the MINOXIDIL CINFA product information, the authorised presentations include a polyethylene bottle with a metered pump of 60 ml, 120 ml (one bottle), 180 ml (three 60 ml bottles) and 240 ml (two 120 ml bottles); other brands use other sizes, such as NORMOPIL's 90, 180 and 270 ml. At the dosage in the product information, 1 ml every 12 hours, 2 ml a day, around 60 ml a month, that works out at between one and four months of treatment. The price of a 240 ml pack and that of a 60 ml pack are not comparable, and many online comparisons put them in the same table without saying so. The useful unit for comparison is not the bottle: it is the month of treatment at the authorised dose.
3. Three different manufacturing routes coexist
In Spain topical minoxidil can reach you by three routes, and each has its own price structure:
- Industrially manufactured medicine: the four AEMPS-authorised medicines mentioned above.
- Official preparation of the Spanish National Formulary: there is a standardised AEMPS monograph, "Minoxidil in hydroalcoholic solution", a cutaneous solution for cutaneous use (record FN/2006/PO/039), carrying the explicit warning "Do not swallow".
- Individualised compounded (extemporaneous) preparation, made up in a pharmacy for a specific patient on prescription.
The fact that the price of a compounded preparation differs from that of an industrial pack is not an anomaly: they follow different pricing logics (compounding rates are set by the regional Official Colleges of Pharmacists). That is why publishing "minoxidil in Spain costs X euros" without stating strength, millilitres, route and date of capture does not inform: it confuses.
What is worth knowing before you look at the price
Topical does not mean it stays out of the bloodstream
This is probably the most widespread misunderstanding. Minoxidil applied to the skin is absorbed, and there is case literature documenting it: a case of syncope after topical application of minoxidil has been published (BMJ Case Rep. 2015;2015:bcr2015210945). That is why the product information insists on applying it only to normal, healthy scalp, and not using it if the scalp is red, inflamed, infected or irritated: under those conditions percutaneous absorption of the drug increases.
The most common side effects are skin-related and reversible
According to the product information for MINOXIDIL VIÑAS and MINOXIDIL CINFA, the most frequent adverse reactions are dermatological: pruritus, dermatitis, dry skin, skin irritation, eczema and hypertrichosis (hair growing where you do not want it). They are usually mild or moderate and reverse on stopping treatment. The product information adds two useful nuances: irritation depends on the dose and hypertrichosis on the way it is administered. In other words, how and how much you apply influences what appears.
There are ages for which it is not recommended
Topical minoxidil is not recommended in people under 18 or over 65, because of a lack of safety and efficacy data in those groups. It is not a prohibition on administrative whim: it simply was not studied in them.
And what role does oral minoxidil play?
CIMA-AEMPS lists product information for oral minoxidil 10 mg, registration number 55636. The Spanish clinical reference on the management of androgenetic alopecia, including low-dose oral minoxidil, is the consensus document of the Spanish Trichology Group of the AEDV (Actas Dermosifiliogr. 2024;115(4):347-355). We are not going to give oral doses here or suggest equivalences: the oral route changes the safety picture compared with the topical one and its use is a matter for individual medical assessment. If you want to go deeper into what has actually been described, we have a map of the real side effects of low-dose oral minoxidil.
What the official sources are categorical about: the topical solution is not to be swallowed. The official preparation of the Spanish National Formulary itself carries the printed warning "Do not swallow". It is not a home-made version of the tablet.
In summary, and what you can do with this
The price of minoxidil in Spain does not vary by chance: it varies because there are four brands with the same composition, packs covering one to four months, and three manufacturing routes with different rates. Comparing without pinning down those variables is pointless. And before price there is a better question: what type of hair loss you have and whether it fits the authorised indication. To answer it, there is now medical treatment of hair loss by telemedicine in Spain, with prior assessment, a prescription where appropriate from a registered doctor and ongoing follow-up, which is AiON. You can start by checking in a few minutes whether you are eligible.

Start assessmentFrequently asked questions
Can you buy minoxidil without a prescription in Spain?
The 5% topical form, yes: the four authorised medicines are listed in CIMA-AEMPS as non-prescription medicines. The oral form, no: the only authorised tablet, Loniten 10 mg, is prescription-only. Being able to buy it without a prescription does not settle the prior question, which is whether your hair loss is the androgenetic alopecia it is indicated for.
Are minoxidil tablets cheaper than the topical solution?
They cannot be compared as if they were the same product. The minoxidil tablet authorised in Spain is 10 mg and its indication is severe high blood pressure; for hair it is used off-label, on prescription and with an individual dosage. Its cost cannot be set alongside that of a bottle of cutaneous solution without also changing the safety picture.
How many months of minoxidil do I have to pay for before I know if it works?
Allow for at least four: the summaries of product characteristics warn that it may take 4 months of use before signs of hair growth appear. At 2 ml a day that is around 240 ml of solution, so it is worth budgeting by months of treatment rather than by a single bottle.
